Sabayon Gnome 5.1 RC1

Sabayon Gnome 5.1 RC1

Fabio has kicked out the RC 1 version of Sabayon Linux mini-dvd to the testers.  I have only been testing out the gnome version so far.  I can’t find anything wrong here on my end.   There is a couple of known issues yet.  As promised tho, it has the updated packages, which will save people from getting hit with a lot of updates immediately after install.   It has a lot of installer fixes in this release.  The fluxbox desktop is being worked on too.  From what I understand, it is now fixed in the installer, so if you choose fluxbox, you will have fluxbox as default desktop when done installing.  Yay!

Fabio has said that he would like to get the final version out around December 10th.  I don’t see why that would not be possible.  A nice top of the line mini-dvd just in time for Christmas.

Happy Thanksgiving! XDM? OO?

November 25th, 2009 wolfden Comments off

Not everyone may celebrates Thanksgiving, but I am one that does.  Each year I get to sit down with family and eat a wonderful meal and watch some good old American Football.  This year will be a quiet Thanksgiving for me as family is spread out.

So what am I thankful for?  I am thankful for another wonderful year working with Sabayon Linux.  I am glad to have met the new people in the past year and that the bonds continue to grow with those that have been there even longer.  I’ve seen some great changes in the past year that are making this distro better and better.

I thought I would take a look at different distros out there and try some out to see what others were doing.  I soon realized at how awesome Sabayon Linux really is for a top choice and how lazy we can get when things don’t work out of the box.  We got all those distros out there and they all have their pros and cons. I learned that Sabayon definitely has a lot of pros to offer to people immediately.  I see people commenting on how they want to graduate from Ubuntu to a higher level distro.  I think that is great that they see us as a challenge to learn more, but that doesn’t make Ubuntu bad in any way.  I have Ubuntu installed on a partition that I keep to see what the competition is doing.  It works great on my end and that is what it all boils down to.  If it works for you,  great, it’s all good.  Anyway, we got a distro that is getting a lot of attention.  I usually have my twitter and identi accounts open and see people posting to #Sabayon a lot.  I holler out to them if they have questions.  It’s just 2 more ways to reach out to people and spread the word.  I was invited to even join up with a !Sabayon group after I answered a question that was posted wondering what our boot up song was.

It helps to have a strong community with great people.  Our community stretches world wide.  I encourage everyone that is interested to get involved with the community of your choice.  You will run into the “tards”, ignore them and move on as their is a lot great people out there to connect with.

Hopefully everyone is noticing an improvement with speeds in entropy.  Fabio talked with the various mirrors to get help with the rsync.  We are always looking for mirrors, so if you or know of someone that can help with mirroring, let us know.  It’s really simple, just setup your rsync and let us know so we can implement you in.  One part of the world we are really struggling with is China.  China really needs a local mirror as entropy is just so slow for downloads.  Questions or concerns on mirrors, please get a hold of us.  Jump on our Mail List, irc freenode #sabayon-dev or email us.

Please bare with the OpenOffice ordeal, it should be nearly worked out.  Your not the only one that is frustrated in having to redownload the bugger.

Mitch aka dontpanic took off to be with family this week for Thanksgiving.  He last reported and acknowledged the issues found on beta1 of core-cd.  Hopefully we see a beta 2 very shortly and that should also become the final version.  I’m just as anxious as you are to install it.

Last time I saw Fabio, he was collecting and nailing the bugs found in beta 1 of 5.1 mini-dvds.  I suspect a beta 2 of that will be out shortly and unless something is really a muck, I am expecting that to become final also.  Just don’t hold me to it, ehehe.  Remember we are always looking for man power to help out.

Oh before I forget.  Please please please, always update you config files with equo conf update.  90% of the time it is safe to select -5, but please look at the config files that it wants to update.  In the last updates, /etc/conf.d/xdm was one of the config files that wanted to be updated.  A lot of people hit -5 and when they rebooted, got something they never imagined.  XDM controls your login and it always defaults to xdm in the config file.  So your gdm or kdm will no long come up.  Easy fix tho, edit the /etc/conf.d/xdm file and look for DISPLAYMANAGER=”xdm” and change the xdm to the one you are using.  Issue the command /etc/init.d/xdm restart and you will have your desktop back.  Over time you will get to learn which config files are important to watch out for.  Just get into the habit of looking at what equo conf update is telling you.  The package manager is vital, it will bite you every time if you don’t pay attention to it.  I can’t stress knowing the package manager enough.  It is the most and top priority to learn.

Have a safe and happy Thanksgiving to all those that are celebrating it.

5.1 CoreCD Beta1 Testing

CoreCD 5.1 Beta

CoreCD 5.1 Beta

Mitch aka dontpanic has done a fantastic job in putting together the 5.1 beta 1 cd.  I fired this up today and it worked great.  I had a couple hickups with an emerge -upDN world, but easily solvable with two USE flags and selecting the proper profile.  Another issue got reported with the x86 version, but all minor.

We didn’t get the 5.0 core-cd out and the work on 5.1 rolled  in very quickly, so we figured it would be best to wait for the 5.1 mainline to settle down than build a core-cd.  It’s a win win situation even tho people had to wait a bit longer.

Testing team is still waiting for beta 2 of the 5.1 mini-dvds.  We decided to also update it some more, so Fabio had to rebuild the isos.  It will have the latest KDE 4.3.3 and Gnome 2.28 desktop environments.  It will have the latest kernel fixes also, like the cups thing.  Remember if you are doing your equo world, you should of seen an install for the kernel so you are also getting the latest stuff and fixes. Woot!

We appreciate everyone’s patience in our releases.

New Sabayon Servers

November 11th, 2009 AjeZ 3 comments

Finally Fabio gave me the pics of the server, and finally I’ve found some time to publish those pics! As we said on the website, thanks to your donations, the end of the fundraiser allowed us to buy the new servers. And now you can see how we spend your money to give you a better service and the best linux distro ever!
With the money (3000 €) we bought and installed two servers:

  • WWW server: Dell PowerEdge R200 w/Dual Core CPU, 2/4GB RAM, HW RAID1, 1TB HDx2
  • 2nd Entropy Server: Dell PowerEdge R200 w/Quad Core CPU, 4GB RAM, HW RAID1, 1TB HDx2

And thank to the University of Milan – D.I.S.C.O. Department for giving us the housing of the WWW Server (where Fabio took the pics).

Unluckily, Fabio got the pics with the cellphone, and it’s better as developer than as a photographer. Noone is perfect! Here comes the pics!

First of all, Fabio (on the right), Michele (on the left) and the servers:

Next is a overview of the Server Rack:

And finally a detail of the WWW Server:

Finally I want to say that Sabayon Staff thanks you all again for your support and your donations. You can keep donating to Sabayon if you want to help us improve this distro more and more. And stay tuned, 5.1 will come very soon!

Bugs! Wonderful Bugs!

November 6th, 2009 Ian "Thev00d00" Whyman Comments off

Bug ImageThe Sabayon bugzilla recently reached the 1000 bug milestone, note this reported bugs, currently we are running at 75 open bugs which includes bugs for every one of the thousands of entropy packages and new entropy package requests, which isn’t too bad, in my opinion at least.

We have to remember that there are 3 core developers, 2 entropy maintainers and about 1o or so core staff, which is the entire Sabayon team and such our resources are not usually freely available.

Anyway, when browsing the bugzilla there are a few trends I would like to comment on, firstly and the bane of Azerthoth’s existence it seems, is that every single bug needs some basic information on a selection of things that are relevant to the bug.

  • Hardware Issue – Dmesg, lspci or lsusb as appropriate, kernel version, entropy version.
  • Entropy Package Issue – Exact version number of the package, Full install log, Any error messages produced by the application when run from a command line, entropy version, branch number and Arch.
  • Live Disk Issues – Did you check the MD5, Did you burn slow?
  • Overlay/Ebuild Issue – emerge –info output, full build log, portage version.

Just adding these simple bits of information makes the developers lives easier and allows the issue to get fixed quicker, so its best for everyone.

Secondly then is the issue of bug naming. For example the below is very bad and well, annoying:

 mail crashed

What does this tell the developers scanning through a buglist or seeing a notification email? Nothing at all about the actual issue, on the other hand a name like:

mail-client/evolution-2.8.3-r2: crash if I close the mail window while checking for new POP mail

Will definitely speed up the process and mean that it canbe put into the hands of the right people to deal with it straight away. Yay!

Finally then, is the issue of user persistence. Our bugzilla has a number of open bugs that are waiting on users to come back to the developers with feedback from possible fixes, version bumps, backports, recompiles etc. The users who went to the time and effort to report the bug now seem to have disappeared completely and the bug is just left hanging  open for a while until it gets closed as invalid due to lack of user input and the issue is therefore never really resolved 100%.

It is important that users stay with their issues and check it occasionally, by default bugzilla should mail you on activity on your bug so please keep an eye out for any updates.

So, that was enough moaning for me for today, but please try to remember the above information, its quite simple and helps to make the process nice and simple.

5.1 Rolling Along

November 4th, 2009 wolfden Comments off

Well, it’s been a while since 5.1 packages entered into mainline and I am pleased to see that for the most part, it went pretty smooth. I think I heard more complaints about the amount of packages vs. updating issues. I can live with that. Portage is constantly changing, very active and can be a challenge to keep up to at times. This keeps entropy maintainers busy bringing you the latest and greatest stuff.

Last week Fabio released the 5.1 beta 1 isos for the testing team and it’s looking pretty good, which it should be since it’s mostly just updated packages. If you are doing your equo update && equo world regularly than you already have 5.1. 5.1 will just basically save a person from having to do so many updates. I believe the latest gnome will be included in the 5.1 as the beta 1 did not have it. Still hammering out all the details for a beta 2.

Fabio is also going to put together a Gamers DVD. You can find more information and ask questions on the forum. The details are sketchy yet and we will of course post more information at a later time. I’m still a die hard enemy territory fan, it’s about the only game I jump into and play.

I want to bring up a post on the developers mailing list that Fabio brought up on Molecule 0.3. I see from time to time people asking about remastering an iso. This is the tool to do it and feel free to check into it. Hopefully we will get some more documentation out on that soon.

Core-cd for 5.* is coming. I know several are wondering about it. Mitch is definitely working on it tho. Hopefully testing team will get a taste of it soon.

We are still looking for people to join in with helping in development. If you want to help and have questions, please join us in #sabayon-dev. You can also use the dev mailing list to contact us.
