Sabayon Linux CoreCD 4.2 Release

July 24th, 2009 wolfden Comments off

Press Release: Sabayon Linux CoreCD 4.2 x86/x86-64

The Sabayon Linux CoreCD is a new type of release for Sabayon. The CoreCD is designed with a minimalistic feature set to provide a foundation for building a customized installation tailored to the users specific needs.

The CoreCD is a text-based release. There is no X-Server, Gnome, or KDE provided.

The Feature list is intentionally short:

  • Bootable Image suitable for a CD or USB thumb drive (~400M)
  • Text-Based installer
  • Basic default networking
  • Entropy and Portage ready

The CoreCD release is targeted to advanced users who want to take full control of the features and packages installed on their system. Sabayon’s Entropy package manager can be utilized as soon as the CoreCD release is installed to quickly build out the installation based on the users exact requirements. The CoreCD also has the capability to install packages using the Portage package management system.

For more information, please see the “Visual Tour: CoreCD” on Sabayon’s Wiki.

The CoreCD release is also targeted to advanced users who seek to design and publish their own customized Sabayon Linux release using the CoreCD release in combination with Sabayon’s Molecule release metatool.

Networking Notes: Advanced user skills may be necessary to implement networking on the CoreCD. The CoreCD can provide simple dhcp networking over wired networks by default. Most advanced networking configurations will require configuration by the user, possibly requiring “chroot-ing” into the CoreCD environment from another Linux environment with working networking.

Corecd, Branch 5 and Apply Within

July 21st, 2009 wolfden Comments off

logo I don’t know about your part of the world, but it’s summer time here in the midwest of the USA and it’s been tough to keep at it with everything.   One wants to be out at the lake, getting yard work done,  have bon fires and all that other fun stuff.   Progress may be hindered by any of the said events.

Mitch has kicked out RC2 to the testers and it’s getting close, a few more tweaks, twists and a little bit of hammering and I feel confident that RC3 will turn into the final version.  I got my fingers crossed anyway.

I don’t know if everyone got the news of Branch 5 stuff yet.  Joost did make a blog post about it.  Do be aware that no support is offered to Branch 5 yet and all bugs submitted are rejected.  Fabio is working on the migration tools from branch 4 to branch 5.  We will be announcing when Branch 5 will be fully supported.  I myself have been in Branch 5 for some time now and it’s been a good experience.  Joost has been working hard on Branch 5 between his summer parties.

We’ve cleaned out the testers list of inactive people and this makes room for people that can be active and have good knowledge of Sabayon Linux to jump on board to be apart of the SL 5 experience.  You can find more information on this on the forum.

We are still looking for translators, we are really struggling to find people to help with this project.  If you are interested in translating, please get a hold of daniel.halens at sabayonlinux dot org and he can answer your questions and get you started.  To continue world domination plans, we need help from all the great people out there.

I’ve started seeing people asking on forum and irc about SL 5 release date.  I stress that the roadmap is only a guideline.  Dates can and will change without notice.  If the date comes and goes and there is no updated roadmap, follow this blog for updates.   Patience from the community will be much appreciated and thanks to everyone that does.

I think that is about it for now.  Hang in there everyone!

SSHFS is Awesome

July 12th, 2009 Ian "Thev00d00" Whyman Comments off

Now sometimes you find a bit of Linux goodness that makes your geeky bits tingle, I found one recently, its called SSHFS, and its part of the awesome fuse framework. As you may have guessed it allows you to mount a file system through a SSH connection, this means it can be read from and saved to as any other part of your local file-system!

This leads to some cool possibilities, mounting a remote server over a secure connection for easy file uploads and downloads, the ability to run local scripts on remote files (WIN) and more.

Its ultra easy to use:

emerge -av1 sys-fs/sshfs-fuse

or

equo install sshfs-fuse

then

sshfs username@server:/path/to/mountpoint

I have it set up to run when I login and I use RSA key based auth so no passwords for ultraconvience at the price of a little bit of security.

Just thought I’d spread the word a bit.

VirtualBox 3.0.0 Now available on Sabayon Overlay

July 2nd, 2009 Ian "Thev00d00" Whyman Comments off

Just committed the three ebuilds, the first is app-emulation/virtualbox-bin-3.0.0 and the second is app-emulation/vitualbox-modules-3.0.0 and finally app-emulation/virtualbox-guest-additions.

I may add the  OSE but I haven’t seen anyone using that recently, so it got left out this time.

This are in the overlay right now and support lots of cool stuff such as SMP (Multiple Virtual CPUs) to guest operating systems, plus guests are now able to access OpenGL 2.0 with hardware acceleration on supported hardware / drivers.

These will hopefully be in mainline entropy after the normal testing process, if you want then now you can simply emerge them.
